Pierre Michelet’s 2016 Olympic cross-country course proves what many have come to love about the sport: it is not a dressage competition. The track is relentlessly technical and will require very accurate riding.

The fences are a beautiful reflection of the host venue with vibrant colors and lovely Brazilian touches throughout. USA’s own Tyson Rementer and Levi Ryckewaert were two of the course builders to produce this eye-pleasing course.
Not only technically difficult, this course will reward the most fit combinations as Michelete has riders taking on a 5,840 meter track with an optimum time of 10 minutes and 15 seconds.

“I want the best to win without asking too big questions of the less experienced riders. The reputation of the sport is important. I want to challenge the riders and I ask them to find clever solutions for the many options on offer. To get on the podium they will need to be brave, accurate and bold” Michelet said to an FEI spokesperson. “This course is not about one signature fence, it’s about about clearing all of them! I ask the difficult questions from the start, that is my signature. The first water will be fence no. 4 already. The riders need to be ready from step one.”
