Kristi Nunnink and R-Star remain tied for third place after cross-country on a 57.2. Josh Walker photo.

Martha McDowell and Gaelic Marriage took a huge leap from 10th place into 5th place after posting the fasted cross-country trip of the division with only 2 time faults. Josh Walker photo.

Lady Calido’s first three-star endeavor has proven to be charmed thus far as she and Robyn Fisher cruised smoothly around the Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3* cross-country course at the Twin Rivers Horse Trials in Paso Robles, California.

Nobody made time today, but who would blame them with temperatures approaching the triple digits by noon? Fisher and “Callie” crossed the finish line in fine form adding only 5.6 time faults to their dressage score. They’ll head into tomorrow’s show jumping phase in the lead on a score of 47.6.

“The course rode really well today with Callie,” Fisher said of her 13-year-old Holsteiner mare. “She’s so easy to pick a pace with and balance.”

Overnight leader Tiana Coudray finished with no jumping faults, but 15.6 time faults to put her in second place with a 54.4, leaving Fisher and Callie in a very comfortable position for tomorrow.

Julie Anne Boyer and Rumor Hazit, after picking up only 6 time faults, jumped up two places to sit tied for third with Kristi Nuninnik and R-Star on 57.2. The combinations of Frankie Thieriot and Fric Frac Berence, Kate Gillespie and Renegade Reno, and Hawley Bennett and Splendorofthesun had one stop apiece.

“Derek does a phenomenal job with the courses,” Fisher said. “They’re very rideable but the questions are challenging, yet forgiving even if you make a minor mistake.”

Fisher and Callie looked especially brilliant through both water complexes, each drawing riders through lines containing four efforts. “She so good, especially with water--it’s like a gymnastic for her,” Fisher explained. “As long as I’m on my line, she locks on and does the rest.”

Though the temperatures hit triple digits by the early afternoon, all of the riders in the CIC divisions completed their trips before the peak of the heat, thanks to a wise rescheduling of events.

“Thanks to the ground jury, they switched the times around, and we ended up going earlier in the morning so we finished before it got too warm. My one-star horse [Fade To Black], went later and we actually went a little slower because of the heat.”

With two rails in hand over Coudray heading into tomorrow's show jumping phase, Fisher’s plan is simple: “As long as I let her do her job and stay out of her way, she should jump,” she said.

Should Fisher win this final Adequan USEA Gold Cup division of the year, she stands to take home an Adequan USEA Gold Cup Trophy, $500 in prize money, 7-dose box of Adequan, a three-month supply of SUCCEED, an E.A. Mattes Couture Pad, and a pair of Nunn Finer American Style open front boots. Second place finishers take home a Nutrena feed gift certificate and a pair of Nunn Finer American Style open front boots, and third place receives a pair of the Nunn Finer boots as well.
