Winding through pine trees, rounding lakes, and going up and down varied terrain made the time nearly impossible to make at the Carolina International CIC and Horse Trials in Raeford, N.C. Only one pair made it so that it was nearly impossible – not impossible. That pair was Doug Payne and Vandiver, the winners of the Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3*.

Kim Severson was the only competitor that had a rail in hand over the person below her on the leaderboard, but she didn’t need it as Cooley Cross Border jumped a flawless double clear round to stay on his dressage score of 20.8. Only 14 of the 56 pairs jumped clear and inside the time over Marc Donovan’s Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3* track at the Carolina International CIC and Horse Trials in Raeford, N.C.

There wasn’t quite enough time to fit all Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3* dressage rides into one day, so the final eight riders took their turn in the sandbox this morning. Luckily the schedule worked for Kim Severson who got stuck in the snowstorm that hit Virginia on Wednesday. “We kept not knowing what the weather was going to do,” explained Severson. “I was really hoping to get out on Wednesday, but we got 6 inches of snow on Wednesday night. So, [the horses] got a nice day off on Wednesday and we drove up on Thursday.”

Only one rail separates the top 13 pairs in the Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3* at the Carolina International CIC and Horse Trials in Raeford, N.C., but overnight leader, Liz Halliday-Sharp thinks it should be more. “I actually thought that Blackie deserved a better score,” said Halliday-Sharp of her 15-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, Fernhill By Night (Radolin x Argentina XII), "but I am just being very greedy.”
