Competing at the Richland Park Horse Trials in Richland, Michigan was a last minute plan for Tamra Smith and Bubbles at Bricky, but the spontaneous decision paid off as the pair won the very competitive CIC2*division.
Bubbles, a 12-year-old Thoroughbred gelding was sent to Tamra to be sold after the 2009 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. She started riding him and their first competition was at Copper Meadows Horse Trials in the Open Preliminary. “I happened to get along with him fantastically, Tamra said. “We won our first competition together and it has gotten better each time.”

Melissa McMaster considers herself an adrenaline junkie. When the 26-year-old from Bryan, Texas first started eventing two years ago, she was immediately drawn to the long-format. Melissa has now completed four training three-day events winning her most recent one at the Coconino Summer Horse Trials in Flagstaff, Arizona aboard Flagmount’s Sterling Prince.

Leslie Law and Fleeceworks Mystere Du Val kept it clear over fences today around Ian Stark’s cross-country course in the Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3* division at the Richland Park Horse Trials. The pair added 6.8 time faults to their dressage score which places them less than one fault ahead of second-placed Jennie Brannigan and Cooper who posted the only double-clear cross-country trip of the division. Kelly Leihy, riding Willowbend’s Two Step “Lucy”, recently took first place in the Entry Level Division at the June 21 Waredaca Starter Trials. Lucy is owned by Charlie Gwynn and Willowbend Farm of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Kelly has been taking riding lessons for 6 years, and is trained by Laura Johnson and Emily Merkel at Willowbend Farm.
Leslie Law and Fleeceworks Mystere Du Val trotted away with a healthy lead in the Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3* division at the Richland Park Horse Trials after dressage. They lead on a score of 42.7 over Phillip Dutton and Woodburn with a 49.9, and Jennie Brannigan and Nate Chambers who are tied in third place on a score of 50.2 with their respective mounts, Cooper and Rolling Stone II. Ian Stark is currently being taken by ambulance to Borders General Hospital in Melrose, to be closer to home while he recovers from a brain bleed.
The Olympic event rider has been recovering in the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, after suffering a brain bleed on Sunday, 9 August shortly after judging at the Dublin Show.
The 2009 Richland Park Horse Trials kicked off this afternoon in Richland, Michigan, with 33 combinations presenting in the first horse inspection for the Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3* division. Kendal Lehari and Understudy (pictured) jogged up in tip top shape. Mara Dean and High Patriot were held but passed upon re-inspection as did Waylon Roberts and Myrddin’s Sebastian.
