DSC_0810As the sun came up over the mountains, members of the USEF Eventing High Performance Team gathered at the bucolic High Acre Farm in The Plains, Virginia to gallop. For the past two days the Team members have been attending training sessions conducted by U.S. Chef d’Equipe Mark Phillips. This morning’s gallop and tomorrow’s veterinary exam are being held in anticipation of the riders’ departure for the Burghley CCI4* in order to ensure each horse’s current fitness and soundness.

One of the most exciting occasions for any equestrian is the arrival of a new horse, whether it be yours or a good friend’s. Last Thursday, I had plenty to celebrate as Dorado’s massage therapist and my good friend Meghan picked up her very first horse, a big black and white gelding named Buddy. As I watched the ‘new mom’ lead her baby around the indoor at his new home for the first time, I though back to when Dorado arrived at his new home.

DSC_0644 It’s 7:15 on a Sunday morning and while most 19-year-olds are still in bed recovering from the fun of Saturday night, Katie Hasse is starting her morning chores at Kilfinnan Stables in Upperville, Virginia. Katie is a groom for upper-level event rider and trainer, Sean McQuillan, and although she says that her job is not glamorous, she has gained a wealth of knowledge that will be so important in her aspiration of becoming a professional rider.

Kelly Prather and Ballinakill Glory basked in the glory of their win at The Event At Rebecca Farm in the CIC3*W division. The pair posted the only double clear show jumping round of the class.

cci1_19_jpg Amy Tryon and Jude’s Law finished atop the pack in the CCI1*, besting 20 other starters to take the win. Tryon dropped only a single rail this afternoon to add to her dressage score of 42.1 and galloped cleanly around the cross-country course on yesterday afternoon. Kelly Pugh and Copycat Chloe jumped up from third to finish the event in second, swapping places with yesterday’s second place holders Karen O’Neal and TC Royale.
