Should riders be allowed to compete on horses that have been given a small amount of bute?
That has been the subject of heated discussion this afternoon at a meeting of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The liveliest debate during a meeting to unveil the FEI’s completed work on "clean sport" centred on the proposal for a complete policy shift to allow horses to compete on low levels of painkillers.
Update on Cooper

Jennie Brannigan fills us in on the condition of her beloved partner Cooper, who sustained a severe injury during Sunday’s show jumping round at the Dansko Fair Hill CCI3* in Elkton, Maryland.
“I’ve had quite a few myself, but I never imagined it would continue with Cooper,” says Brannigan. “To be quite honest, Cooper got put on a pedestal in my eyes. He wasn’t just a great horse that won some shows. He changed my life. He got me my job at Phillip’s, he got me every sponsor, and he has made some of my dreams come true. Not to be corny, but I know that’s the truth.”

LANDENBERG, Pa. - Avondale police are investigating the case of a thoroughbred whose owner says was stolen from her home. Jill Potts says Studley, a former race horse owned by Potts, was last seen on Church Road Hill in Landenberg, Pa. Studley was reportedly being led away from her property with a rope around his neck on Saturday.
Police are investigating the case as a horse theft.

Hugh Lochore is quickly putting his own stamp on the Red Hills cross-country course. No stranger to Red Hills, Hugh built the course from the ground up, resigning his position as course builder in 2008 in hopes of transitioning into design. Hugh has been working feverishly with our current course builder, Eric Bull, to shift the emphasis of the cross country challenge to a more natural set of obstacles that will encourage horse and rider to establish a rhythmic pace. “In creating tracks that help riders to settle their horses into a balanced rhythm early in the course, we are able to make the whole experience more fun for not only the riders but the horses as well. It is imperative that we get the horses into a positive frame of mind so that they leave the event better for their experience here. This is a fundamental part of the education that takes the horses to the higher levels of the sport in the first place,” says Lochore.
This past May, I was lucky enough to volunteer at Indiana Eventing Association’s Training Level Three Day Event (T3DE). At a classic event like a T3DE, after the two phases of roads and tracks and the steeplechase phase the horses have their vital signs and soundness checked by a veterinarian before heading out on cross-country. At Indiana, Chris Newton, DVM, of Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, volunteered his time to lecture T3DE competitors on preparing their horses for endurance day. He discussed not only what to do in the ten-minute box, but a larger philosophy of planning for the horse’s physical health over the long term.

Is your horse afraid of fireworks? Dr. Joyce Harman shares a few simple tactics to help him in her Ask the Vet column on EquiSearch.com.
By Dr. Joyce Harman
Fireworks can be very frightening for many horses. Their safe home is invaded by sudden, loud noises, and they cannot get away from it. Horses have been known to run through fences or just run through the fields injuring themselves along the way. They can be in a blind panic and not be thinking about uneven ground. They can get tendon and ligament injuries, sprains or cuts.

Bonnie Mosser has decided to offer four free lessons to a non-pro preparing for his/her first full "classic" format Three Day Event this fall (either 1/2* or 1*).
This past spring I sold raffle tickets to help Bonnie raise money for her trip to Badminton. We had an amazing outpouring of support and sold ~$5,000 worth of tickets. As promised, we drew our winner the night of dressage day and were surprised to see fellow international competitor Bobby Costello’s ticket pop out of the hat. We immediately texted Bobby and while he was thrilled to win he encouraged us to draw a second, more deserving winner. This winner was Carla Mcleod and her daughter Alex will be reaping the benefits of her mother’s ticket purchase later this fall.

The Tools of the Trade
The first photo is my braiding box. I keep all of my braiding equipment in it, as well as my small clippers. It’s very handy as it also serves as a stool. I think I bought the step at KMart several years ago for around $30. It was pricey, but it’s good quality.
