frangible_pin By Dan Starck, co-chair of the USEA Eventing Course Designers/Builders Committee & Member of the USEA Safety Committee

Many people are wondering, "What is the new rule for frangible fences and how will it affect me?" We are all looking for ways to make our sport safer and this is a way the USEF and USEA are moving toward safer competitions.

In the USEF Rules For Eventing, EV 140, line 8, the rule concerning frangible jumps reads:

“Obstacles constructed after December 1, 2008, for which approved frangible technology is appropriate, shall be constructed using this technology. Obstacles constructed prior to December 1, 2008 and for which the use of approved frangible technology is appropriate shall be retrofit using this technology prior to December 1, 2009. All open oxers at the Preliminary level and above must be constructed using approved frangible technology. Information on the appropriate applications of frangible technology in cross-country fence construction is available in the USEA Cross-Country Obstacle Design Guidelines. Frangible Technology may be installed only by or under the supervision of Course Designers/ Course Builders who have attended a USEA Seminar on frangible fence construction.”

image Lucinda Green: Are We Missing Out On The Greatest Safety Belt We Have On Cross-Country?

Lucinda Green spoke frankly and with great passion to a convention room filled of diehard eventers, officials, organizers, and friends of the sport on Saturday December 13. Those attending the USEA Annual Meeting and Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, stood and applauded Lucinda at the conclusion of her relevant, direct, and emotional discourse, which was tastefully peppered with comedic relief when appropriate.

We’ve extracted some of the key points below which we hope you will find enlightening and engaging. You will also find the full “almost uncut” (minus technical malfunctions) audio file for your perusal.

image I wanted to share with you one of my favorite speeches at this year’s USEA Annual Meeting & Convention. Carol Kozlowski, incoming VP of Safety, Board of Governors member, longtime rider and trainer, and recipient of a Governor’s Cup trophy for her dedication to the sport, spoke of some of the important issues and mindsets facing our sport today, which I think many of you will take to heart.

Enjoy Carol’s speech below!
