Despite having a few roller coaster works in the last week before the big event, Dorado’s first show went off without a hitch! I was beaming when we took our victory lap at the end – even though we were at the end of the line! – because he made it through the day in a great mental and physical state, and put his heart into it 100%.

boxIt was time for the big move up. After spending my entire eventing career at the lower levels, my pony and I had finally reached the point where we were ready to move up to Training. Moving up to Training brought with it some added expenses including the dreaded studs.

I had groomed at many events for friends doing the upper levels so had a decent amount of experience putting in studs – and boy did I hate it. I despised digging out the stud plug, cleaning out the holes where the plug had fallen out, defiantly holding onto a leg that the horse is desperately yanking away, and worst of all – dropping the stud in a pile of fresh manure.

USEA staffers Emily Daily, Josh Walker, and Erica Larson will be on site at the Fair Hill International Three-Day Event in Elkton, Maryland and will be posting daily updates starting tonight. Check out the photo galleries of all the riders, interviews, and competition reports. May 28, 2008 Statement from Karen and David O’Connor:

In response to the many inquiries about today’s accident Karen and David wish to make the following statement:

“‘Teddy’ got frightened and bolted. He slipped running back to the barn and suffered a severe laceration to his hind leg, severing the tendons and ligaments. Dr. A Kent Allen was on the scene  immediately and it was determined after examination that the injuries were catastrophic. Everyone who knew Teddy is devastated.”

The USEA and the entire eventing world extends deepest sympathies to Karen and David and Teddy’s owners. Teddy was, and always will be, an inspiration to us all. He was the People’s Pony. He was truly unique and his bravery, his brilliance, his indomitable  strength and his zest for life and the sport will never be forgotten. (USEA staff.)

“What joy he brought to all of us and what an ambassador for our sport.” (Kyra King Stuart, past president USEA.)

This camp will be held two times in 2008: June 2-6 and September 15-19, at Phillip and Evie Dutton’s True Prospect Farm in West Grove, Pennsylvania. Camp participants will be inundated with training and education on three-day eventing and horsemanship.

At the risk of sounding like a giddy child on Christmas morning, I have to say that I am absolutely STOKED about Rolex! And I know I’m not alone… ;) You know who you are - packin’ up your Wellies, checking the square footage of space in your car for maximum stuffage of your intended purchases, counting your pennies & cashing old birthday checks in eager anticipation of the ever-popular trade fair….

Okay, actually, while I’m on the subject of the trade fair, have you been inside the "official Rolex Kentucky logowear tent?" Oh MY… it’s chaos… reminiscent of Black Friday at Macy’s. I went in there last year to get a t-shirt and literally feared for my life. I recommend going early, taking bottled water & snacks, a lifevest, and flares… you may not come out alive. Either that or your significant other may kill you later when he/she discovers how much of your life savings you spent.

There’s a ton of great stuff going on this year - check out the press release on the USEA site, and also the Rolex site as well. Lots of cool demos (Pony Club quadrilles, Future Event Horse demo, dog agility - aka lots of stuff to distract your significant other while you jet over to the trade fair for the 18th time) and of course the USEA tent is going to be amazing. Of course! Would we ever let you down? We’ve got all sorts of awesome Mountain Horse clothes, hoodies, jackets, hats, t-shirts, etc… all tastefully embroidered with the USEA logo. Yes, tastefully…you know, actually, color-coordinated!

Okay - let’s get down to brass tacks here… who’s going to be RIDING at Rolex? Which horses (and riders) do we get to ogle over and cheer on? Glad you asked…

It’s the Monday after, and I am happy to report a safe and successful show ran at Poplar Place this weekend in Hamilton, GA.

The weather on Sunday was frigid and icky, a stark difference from the sunshine and warm temperature on Saturday. Nonetheless, I saw smart riding, smart horses, and good sportsmanship. As I mentioned before, Mom and I judged the big water for Training and Preliminary with very few penalties occurring at our fence. Only one poor girl took a dunking in that freezing water, and a pony running her first Training slipped on the grass, but she picked up and continued on to finish the course. The big water, however, was not the big question on the course. The Mulberry Pond, the second water complex on course, proved to be challenging for many horses and riders. Roland Thacker, the judge at this fence, joked that after a while he gave up sitting down. Kudos to Roland for handling his fence well. All of the volunteers were super and worked hard. The medical teams and course officials were spot on, also.
